Downtown Boys came out of Providence, Rhode Island, where singer Victoria Ruiz and guitarist Joey La Neve DeFrancesco met working at a hotel and wrote their early songs about labor and organizing. Rolling Stone once called them America's most exciting punk band, and across three albums they pushed a bilingual, saxophone-driven sound that keeps politics in the foreground. Public Luxury is their first record in nearly a decade, since 2017's Cost of Living, and the one DeFrancesco describes as their most expansive yet, written to carry the force of the band's live shows onto tape. He co-produced it with Seth Manchester at Machines With Magnets in Pawtucket, the same room that hosted some of the band's earliest performances. Punk and indie roots run through Latin rhythms, drum machines, saxophones and layered synths.
