2026 European Pressing On Ipanema Sun, With Insert
A 2026 European pressing of Gal Costa's second 1969 album, issued on Ipanema Sun as catalogue 1406 alongside its Caetano Veloso companion. Ipanema Sun has no connection to Philips or to the original rights holders, and Discogs catalogues the label's output and this release as unofficial — we would rather say so than imply an authorization that is not there. The record comes with an insert carrying the original liner notes, lyrics and personnel.
Costa released two albums in 1969, both effectively self-titled, and this is the second of them. It is often referred to as Cinema Olympia, after the opening track, to tell it apart from the debut that came months earlier. Philips issued it in Brazil in mono as R 765.098 L.
Manoel Barenbein produced. Rogério Duprat wrote every arrangement and directed the music. Lanny Gordin plays guitar and bass, Jards Macalé plays violão and sings on "The Empty Boat", the one track in English. Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil both sing on "País Tropical", and Veloso wrote the liner notes. Dircinho drew the cover.
The writing comes almost entirely from outside: three songs by Gilberto Gil, two by Caetano Veloso, two by Jorge Ben, and "Pulsars e Quasars" by Jards Macalé and Capinam. "Meu Nome é Gal" was written for her by Roberto Carlos and Erasmo Carlos.
