The standard edition of Amulet on black vinyl carries Future Classic catalog number FCL730LP1. All twelve songs sit on a single disc, six to a side, and the lyrics are printed on the inner sleeve.

Freak Slug is the name under which Xenya Genovese, a Manchester singer, songwriter and visual artist, makes records. She came up through three EPs, Slow Down Babe in 2021, I'm In Love in 2022 and Viva la Vulva in 2023, before her first album arrived in 2024. According to Future Classic, her 2026 took in a first Coachella performance and a six-week tour supporting the Irish band NewDad ahead of this album's campaign.

The album was recorded in London and finished in Los Angeles. In an interview with The Forty-Five she traced its subject to a spiritual reading that described a past life as a healer in Celtic lands, in a time of religious upheaval and violence against women. Of "Black Eyes" she told the magazine: "It's about anger towards a man who is so dismissive of a woman and her spirituality, and just has none of it."

"Girl, Intentions" interpolates Nina Simone's "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and takes its title from the film Girl, Interrupted. "Serpent," in Genovese's words, "was not meant to be an album song; it was like 'Planet Caravan' by Black Sabbath, we were just playing around with bongos." On the finished track her voice runs through autotune and a megaphone.
