Indie Exclusive Baja Blue Vinyl LP, RSD Essentials #102

Baja Sessions had never been issued on vinyl before this 30th anniversary release from Sun Records. This edition is a single LP pressed on Baja Blue vinyl, part of Record Store Day's RSD Essentials series for independent record stores and numbered #102. Sun issued a black pressing on the same street date.

The album first appeared on Reprise on October 8, 1996, as Isaak's sixth studio record, with Erik Jacobsen producing. The title points to Baja California, where Isaak and his band had gone surfing, but the songs were cut at Coast Recorders in San Francisco, mostly in acoustic arrangements. Hershel Yatovitz plays lead guitar, Rowland Salley bass and Kenney Dale Johnson drums.

Sun Records' notes describe a surf-inspired set: Isaak's versions of songs made famous by Roy Orbison and Bing Crosby, next to acoustic readings of his own material from Silvertone, Heart Shaped World and San Francisco Days. The covers include "Only the Lonely," the Hawaiian standard "Sweet Leilani" and "South of the Border (Down Mexico Way)."

The record was certified Gold by the RIAA in the US and by ARIA in Australia. A 58-minute documentary made around the album shows Isaak performing the songs and surfing.
