The band produced it themselves, and it was their first album with bassist Scott Shriner, who joined after Mikey Welsh left in 2001. It was recorded at Cello Studios in Los Angeles in December 2001, mixed by Tom Lord-Alge at South Beach Studios in Miami that January, and mastered by Stephen Marcussen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe record was made in unusually public view. Weezer posted demos to its website through the sessions and traded notes with fans on message boards; fan requests brought the 2000 song \"Slob\" back into the running, and a board member posting as Lethe suggested the title, a word meaning awkward or clumsy.
