The Ballad of Todd Rundgren, made by Rhino for its Rocktober 2026 program. The lacquers were cut from the original analog master by Matthew Lutthans at The Mastering Lab, and the record is pressed on heavyweight 180-gram vinyl.

Rhino Reserve is the label's audiophile series: 180-gram black vinyl pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing in Oxnard, California, with heavyweight board jackets, Rhino Reserve labels and a Fidelity-branded poly sleeve, and with the original packaging kept as it was. Rocktober 2026 itself is a run of 54 Rhino vinyl reissues aimed at brick-and-mortar record stores through October.

The album is Rundgren's second, issued in 1971 on Bearsville with Ampex distribution and, like the debut before it, credited to Runt. Rundgren wrote, arranged and produced every song and handled all the guitars, keyboards and vocals himself. In the liner notes to the 1999 CD he put it plainly: "I took a crack at playing it all myself." Tony Sales plays bass on most tracks and N. D. Smart most of the drums, with Jerry Scheff and John Guerin on two songs and Hunt Sales drumming on one.

Most of the twelve songs are piano-led ballads; "Bleeding" and "Parole" are the rock numbers, and "Chain Letter" is the closing anthem of the first half. "Be Nice to Me" and "A Long Time, A Long Way to Go" were the singles. Milton Glaser designed the cover, and Ron Mael, later of Sparks, handled the inside photographs and design.

Tracklist

Long Flowing Robe

The Ballad (Denny & Jean)

Bleeding

Wailing Wall

The Range War

Chain Letter

A Long Time, A Long Way to Go

Boat on the Charles

Be Nice to Me

Hope I'm Around

Parole

Remember Me

UPC: 081227802615
Label: Rhino
Release Date: 10.30.26
Format: Vinyl
