It first appeared on Dunhill in September 1971, produced by Richard Podolor and recorded at American Recording Co. in Studio City, California. It reached No. 8 on the Billboard album chart and was certified gold by the RIAA.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThree singles came from it. Paul Williams wrote \"An Old Fashioned Love Song\" with the Carpenters in mind; after Richard Carpenter passed on it, Three Dog Night took it to No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the easy listening chart, with Chuck Negron singing lead. The band's cover of Hoyt Axton's \"Never Been to Spain\" reached No. 5, and \"The Family of Man,\" by Williams and Jack Conrad, followed in 1972 at No. 12.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNine of the ten songs came from outside writers, among them Stevie Wonder and Syreeta Wright (\"Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer\") and Joni Mitchell (\"Night in the City\"); only \"Jam\" is credited to the band.
