It is what survived of Lifehouse, the multimedia rock opera Pete Townshend had intended as the follow-up to Tommy. Glyn Johns, credited as associate producer, pressed the band to put out a single studio album instead, and said afterwards that he had acted mainly in an engineering capacity and based most of the arrangements on Townshend's demos.
