Pete Townshend wrote most of it after being introduced to the teachings of Meher Baba. John Entwistle wrote "Cousin Kevin" and "Fiddle About," Keith Moon is credited with "Tommy's Holiday Camp," and "The Hawker" is Sonny Boy Williamson's "Eyesight to the Blind."

Kit Lambert produced the sessions, which began in September 1968 and took six months.
