It follows the running order of the 1995 CDs rather than the three-LP first vinyl edition, which had its own sequence and two extra songs, and its eight sides divide into the album's two halves, Dawn to Dusk on the first two records and Twilight to Starlight on the last two. Each disc sits in a custom inner sleeve inside a second printed sleeve, the slipcase carries updated artwork, and the set includes a 36-page full-color art book with band notes and photos and a 28-page illustrated lyric book. Stan Getz II cut the lacquers at A+R Record Manufacturing in Dallas, and the records were pressed by Pallas in Germany.

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness is the band's third album, released by Virgin in October 1995.
