Joe Harley produced it, and Kevin Gray of Cohearent Audio mastered it from the original analog master tapes. It was pressed on 180g vinyl at Record Technology Inc. (RTI) and is packaged in a deluxe tip-on gatefold jacket. Mono is how the album first appeared in 1957; the later stereo issue, BST 81558, was a pseudo-stereo transfer.

The gatefold opens on black-and-white session photographs. The largest shows Rollins at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, on April 14, 1957, and smaller frames show J.J. Johnson with Rollins, Horace Silver with Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey at the kit, and Rollins with producer Alfred Lion. A printed sheet reproduces the original back-cover liner notes.

Blue Note President Don Was started the Tone Poet Audiophile Vinyl Reissue Series out of admiration for the audiophile Blue Note LPs that Music Matters had issued. He brought in Harley, known as the "Tone Poet," to choose and supervise reissues from across the Blue Note family of labels. Rollins's live set A Night at the Village Vanguard: The Complete Masters also has a Tone Poet edition.

Rollins first played a Blue Note session in 1949 as a member of Bud Powell's Modernists. He came back in 1956 and made four albums as leader in less than a year. Vol. 2, his second album for Lion, was recorded in a single day and came out that October. Johnson plays trombone, Silver piano, Paul Chambers bass and Blakey drums. Johnson appears by courtesy of Columbia Records and Monk by courtesy of Riverside Records.

The set opens with two Rollins originals, "Why Don't I" and "Wail March," and closes with the standards "You Stepped Out of a Dream" and "Poor Butterfly." In the middle are two Monk compositions. On "Misterioso" both Monk and Silver play piano. On "Reflections" Monk plays alone and Silver sits out.

Joe Jackson copied the album's sleeve for his 1984 album Body and Soul. In 2026 Vol. 2 reached number 15 on the UK Official Charts Jazz & Blues Albums list.

Tracklist

Side A

Why Don't I

Wail March

Misterioso

Side B

Reflections

You Stepped Out of a Dream

Poor Butterfly

UPC: 602458892857
Label: Blue Note Records
Release Date: 9.11.26
Format: Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0718/8801/1422/files/SonnyRollins_Vol2_PROD_SHOT_7361df8f-481e-448e-bf44-7b277f7f679c.png?v=1791176815
