During the break, Stuart Matthewman, Paul S. Denman and Andrew Hale worked on side projects, among them the band Sweetback. The album was recorded between September 1999 and August 2000 at Sarm Hook End in Oxfordshire, Deliverance in London and El Cortijo in San Pedro de Alcantara, Spain. The band produced and arranged it with Mike Pela, and Tom Coyne mastered it. Its title comes from the romantic reggae style Sade Adu listened to growing up.

The arrangements set aside the saxophone of the earlier records for acoustic guitar, light beats and dub-style echo, with Nick Ingman's strings on "King Of Sorrow" and Andy Nice's cello on "Every Word." Slant Magazine's Sal Cinquemani described it as a concept album and pointed to "Slave Song" and "Immigrant" as social statements. "The Sweetest Gift" is dedicated to the Rainbow Trust Children's Charity.

"By Your Side," the lead single, came out in the US on October 3, 2000, with a video directed by Sophie Muller, shown above; "King Of Sorrow" followed on March 12, 2001.
