Work began at Canned Applause, a converted apple shed near Didcot, in July 1996, and moved to St Catherine's Court near Bath from September 1996 to March 1997, with further sessions at The Church in Crouch End. It entered the UK chart at number one on 136,000 copies in its first week and reached number 21 on the Billboard 200.
