At a private screening organized by Malle's assistant Jean-Paul Rappeneau, Davis was given only the briefest of harmonic sketches; he assembled a quintet on the spot — French jazzmen Barney Wilen on tenor saxophone, René Urtreger on piano, Pierre Michelot on bass, and his American compatriot Kenny Clarke on drums — and improvised the entire score to picture as the film played in the studio, without rehearsal.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe result is one of the most quietly influential records in modern jazz: a film-noir reading of cool jazz, atmospheric and immediate.
