Williams formed the Plasmatics in New York City in 1978, and the band made its first public appearance at CBGB that July. Per the back-cover notes, the EPs came out over 1978 and 1979 and then fell out of print once the group signed to Stiff Records in the UK, a deal Wikipedia dates to March 1980.

The same notes give the studio story. The first recording of "Butcher Baby" was recorded and mixed in less than five hours, three and a half of which went to recording the chainsaw, and the saw filled the studio with smoke. "Fast Food Service" and "Concrete Shoes" were taped at CBGB at the first show the Plasmatics ever officially played there, and for the "noise jam" version of "Want You Baby" that closes side B, the players were isolated so that none of them could hear what the others were playing. The video above, from the band's official channel, shows "Want You Baby" at CBGB on July 26, 1978.

Williams is credited on the sleeve with vocals, saxophone, chainsaw and "Chicago Typewriter." Richie Stotts plays lead and rhythm guitar throughout, Wes Beech adds rhythm guitar on the Dream Lover and Meet The Plasmatics tracks, and Chosei Funahara and Stu Deutsch hold down bass and drums.
