The nine songs run to about 96 minutes over six sides. "When" fills side A by itself, and the 19-minute "Blackwater Park" takes up all of side E.

The album was recorded at the Roundhouse in Camden, London, on November 9, 2006, at a show that also featured Paradise Lost. Mikael Åkerfeldt has said the concert "caught the band at the peak of the Ghost Reveries tour." The lineup was Åkerfeldt on guitar and vocals, Peter Lindgren on guitar, Martín Méndez on bass, Per Wiberg on keyboards and backing vocals, and Martin Axenrot on drums.
