This is the UK release of the anniversary edition. The band wanted to issue it alongside Damnation as a double album, but the record company put the two out separately so that each could be promoted on its own. Work started at Nacksving Studio, where equipment broke down and drum microphones shifted position or went missing, and the band finished the record at Studio Fredman once Steven Wilson joined them. Fredrik Nordström and Fredrik Reinedahl also engineered. Mikael Åkerfeldt's grandmother died during the recording, and he dedicated both albums to her.

"Master's Apprentices" is named after the Australian rock band The Masters Apprentices, and "For Absent Friends" takes its title from a song on Genesis' Nursery Cryme. The last note of "By The Pain I See In Others" fades out at 10:40.
