Merge's store notes that Magnet Magazine named it the best album of the 1990s.

Neutral Milk Hotel's second and final studio album was recorded from July to September 1997 at Pet Sounds Studio. Producer Robert Schneider worked with bandleader Jeff Mangum on a cleaner sound than the band's debut, On Avery Island, using heavy compression rather than effects units to get the distortion on the record. Singing saw and uilleann pipes sit alongside guitar and drums, and Anne Frank's diary was a major influence on the lyrics.

Merge released the album on February 10, 1998.
