The label calls it an expansive double album and a "mood music" project the guitarist had wanted to make for more than 25 years. Cline has said the idea first came to him in the 1980s, when he would draft and revise song lists on airplanes.

Michael Leonhart arranged the music and conducted an ensemble the label numbers at 23 musicians. The lineup includes guitarist Julian Lage, harpist Zeena Parkins, vibraphonist Kenny Wollesen, cellist Erik Friedlander, clarinetist Ben Goldberg, trumpeter Steven Bernstein, bassist Devin Hoff and Cline's twin brother, Alex Cline, on drums and percussion. David Breskin produced the album, Ron Saint Germain recorded and mixed it, and the sessions took place in November and December 2013.

The program sets Cline's own compositions beside Great American Songbook standards by Rodgers and Hart, Rodgers and Hammerstein and Jerome Kern, along with pieces by Sonic Youth, Arto Lindsay, Jimmy Giuffre, Gabor Szabo, Annette Peacock and Henry Mancini. Blue Note names Bill Evans, Jim Hall, Gil Evans, Johnny Mandel and Mancini among the album's inspirations.

Lovers holds a Metacritic score of 84. NPR Music and the Boston Globe each listed it among the best jazz albums of 2016, and AllMusic included it in its favorite jazz albums of that year. Cline premiered the material at the Newport Jazz Festival on July 31, 2016, then performed it at Royce Hall in Los Angeles and at SFJAZZ in April 2017.

Rolling Stone has named Cline one of its 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. Alongside his full-time place in Wilco, he has led groups including the Nels Cline Singers and appeared on more than 200 albums as a guest or featured player.

Tracklist

Disc 1

Introduction / Diaphanous

Glad To Be Unhappy

Beautiful Love

Hairpin & Hatbox

Cry, Want

Lady Gabor

The Bed We Made

You Noticed

Secret Love

I Have Dreamed

Disc 2

Why Was I Born?

Invitation

It Only Has To Happen Once

The Night Porter / Max, Mon Amour

Snare, Girl

So Hard It Hurts / Touching

The Search For Cat

The Bond

UPC: 602547899392
Label: Blue Note Records
Release Date: 8.19.16
Format: CD
