Matthew Caws (guitar, vocals), Daniel Lorca (bass) and Ira Elliot (drums) recorded it at Electric Lady Studios in New York in December 1995, with Ric Ocasek of the Cars producing, Bruce Calder engineering and mixing, and George Marino mastering the original release.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCaws and Lorca wrote all ten songs, sharing \"Deeper Well\" with Robert Randall and \"Popular\" with Gloria Winters. \"Popular\" was the band's breakout, reaching No. 11 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart, and the album reached No. 63 on the Billboard 200. The Baltimore Sun's 1996 review heard \"an almost elegant austerity\" in the record's sound.
