The vinyl sequence lists fifteen tracks, eight on side A and seven on side B; "Prelude," "Message to B.A." and "Real Niggaz" from the 18-track CD edition are not listed.

The album was released in May 1991 as N.W.A's second and final studio album. Dr. Dre and DJ Yella produced it, with Eazy-E as executive producer, and it was recorded at Audio Achievements in Torrance, California. Ice Cube had left the group by then, and N.W.A disbanded later that year when Dr. Dre and The D.O.C. departed. The title appears in mirror image on the cover, and the label catalogs it as Efil4zaggin.

It entered the Billboard 200 at number two and reached number one in its second week, and it also topped the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart; the RIAA certified it platinum. Its explicit content drew wide criticism on release, and in the UK police seized copies in June 1991 before the album was cleared of obscenity charges that November.
