Chess states that the series is remastered from the original analog tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings. Each title is packaged in a tip-on gatefold jacket printed on high-grade board. The front reproduces the original stereo cover with its LPS 1507 catalog number. Opened, the gatefold shows two black-and-white portraits of Waters, and the black disc carries the multicolor Chess label.

Waters is well represented in the series. This record joined The Best Of Muddy Waters, Folk Singer and The Real Folk Blues there, and At Newport 1960 followed it. In 2026 the album reached No. 40 on Croatia's HDU international albums chart.

The sessions took place on June 22 and 23, 1966, at Ter Mar Recording Studios in Chicago, with Gene Barge and Ralph Bass producing, and Chess first issued the album in 1966. It was his third studio album. The credited band is Otis Spann on piano, James Cotton on harmonica, Pee Wee Madison and Sammy Lawhorn on guitar, Calvin Jones on bass and Willie Smith on drums. Barge plays tenor saxophone, and uncredited musicians cover alto and baritone saxophone, trumpet, trombone and organ.

Chess's own notes observe that the cover shows Waters holding a guitar while the record puts his R&B singing out front, and AllMusic compared moments of it to Otis Redding. Much of the material comes from the blues and R&B songbook: Jessie Mae Robinson's "Black Night," Richard M. Jones' "Trouble in Mind," Chuck Willis' "Betty and Dupree," Robert Nighthawk's "Sweet Little Angel," and "Piney Brown Blues" by Pete Johnson and Big Joe Turner. Waters wrote "Hard Loser" under his given name, McKinley Morganfield, and Barge co-wrote "Take My Advice."

Tracklist

Side A

Corine, Corina

Piney Brown Blues

Black Night

Trouble In Mind

Going Back To Memphis

Side B

Betty And Dupree

Sweet Little Angel

Take My Advice

Trouble

Hard Loser

UPC: 199957490160
Label: Chess
Release Date: 7.24.26
Format: Vinyl
