The jacket reproduces the original cover art, with the label's ONE mark in place of the Columbia logo and a sticker identifying it as a 180-gram audiophile pressing. Side A holds the two long pieces, "Concierto de Aranjuez" and "Will o' the Wisp." Side B holds "The Pan Piper," "Saeta" and "Solea," and closes with "Song of Our Country," a Heitor Villa-Lobos piece arranged by Gil Evans that was added to the album as a bonus on the 1997 reissue.

Columbia released the album on July 18, 1960. Davis and Evans recorded it at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York on November 15 and 20, 1959, and March 10, 1960, with Teo Macero producing, the first of his many Davis albums. Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb and Elvin Jones played in the orchestra. Evans said they had set out only to record the Rodrigo concerto; listening to Spanish folk music, much of it from Alan Lomax's field recordings in Galicia and Andalusia, turned it into a Spanish album.

The opening track adapts the slow second movement of Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez, and "Will o' the Wisp" comes from Manuel de Falla's ballet El amor brujo. Evans and Davis won the 1961 Grammy for Best Jazz Composition of More Than Five Minutes Duration for the album.
