Davis's sextet recorded the three side-one pieces at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York on March 2, 1959, and the two side-two pieces there on April 22. The group was John Coltrane, Julian \"Cannonball\" Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb, with Wynton Kelly taking the piano chair from Evans on \"Freddie Freeloader.\" Irving Townsend produced, and Fred Plaut engineered.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eDavis built the album entirely on modes, giving each player a set of scales rather than a run of chord changes, and Evans wrote in the original liner notes that Davis conceived the settings only hours before the recording dates. The Davis estate acknowledged Evans's authorship of \"Blue in Green\" in 2002.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eColumbia released \u003cem\u003eKind of Blue\u003c\/em\u003e on August 17, 1959.
