Those sessions, recorded in New York between November 1969 and June 1970, supplied the basis for the 1971 album Jack Johnson and some of the studio portions of Live-Evil.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLegacy's notes trace the record to Davis's love of boxing, which he saw as running parallel to his own relationship with music. They name his 1971 soundtrack to Bill Cayton's documentary about Jack Johnson as one of his favorites among his own recordings, and say he was drawn to the political and racial subtext of the boxer's story.
