The labels describe it as the album's first vinyl reissue in more than 50 years. Mike Milchner remastered it at SonicVision, and the insert carries new liner notes by Joe Marchese of The Second Disc along with photographs from the film's production.

Watermelon Man (1970) was the only studio film directed by Melvin Van Peebles, whom Real Gone Music's notes call the "godfather of black cinema." Godfrey Cambridge stars as Jeff Gerber, a bigoted insurance salesman who wakes up one morning to find he has become Black, with Estelle Parsons as his wife, Althea.
