Lee "Scratch" Perry produced and engineered it at his Black Ark studio in Kingston, with his house band the Upsetters behind Max Romeo, and the label notes that it was recorded in two weeks. By then Romeo had sung on more than 120 7-inch singles and had moved from his early rude records toward songs about poverty and political violence in Jamaica. Barry Llewellyn and Earl Morgan sing the male harmonies, and Cynthia Schloss and Marcia Griffiths the female ones.

"One Step Forward" came out as a single in 1975, followed by the title track and "Chase The Devil" in 1976 and "Norman" in 1977.
