Stephen F. X. Betts has said the studio insisted he play its Hammond instead of his own instrument. Frank Artes has described "Ants" as having a threatening, marching feel in places, and Davey as able to play some genuinely out-there material.

By 1974 the group had already recorded in Dublin, a 1973 session Seelie Court released as part of After The Race, and had replaced an earlier saxophonist with Davey. Tony Coxon takes the solos on "Oedipus Wrecks" and "Don't Speak With Your Mouth Full"; Betts calls the latter more of a lament.

At the band's request the writer Michael Bjorn contributed an original science-fiction story, "A Story of Colliding Worlds," for the release.
