It follows Long Light from 2023, which the label describes as among his most collaborative, song-forward albums; in the label's words, Melting Days returns Jeff McIlwain to his minimalist roots. The label frames the ten pieces around loss and transition. McIlwain has said: \"When you're moving through grief, it's as if you're watching your previous life get foggier and foggier.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBryan Manzo plays saxophone on the opening and closing tracks, \"Sightline\" and \"Uncharted.\" Trent Moorman's drums appear as samples, and \"Apparition\" is built in part from cello run through a series of filters. The label's notes name Susumu Yokota's Sakura, the mid-2000s records of Mountains, and early Aphex Twin, Seefeel and Locust as touchstones, with McIlwain's own 2007 album Language Barrier as the nearest precedent in his catalog. \"Pendulum,\" which opens side B, was the first single, followed by \"Bird's Eye.\" On his arrangements, McIlwain has said: \"It's hard for me to let a track just sort of stay where it is.
