(Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series)

180-Gram Black Vinyl, Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series

This single 180-gram LP belongs to the Contemporary Records Acoustic Sounds Series, Craft Recordings' all-analog run of titles from Lester Koenig's Los Angeles label, and it was issued on June 16, 2023 under catalog number CR00594. Bernie Grundman cut the lacquers from the original tapes with no digital step in the chain; Grundman once worked for Contemporary himself. Quality Record Pressings in Kansas pressed the disc, and it ships in a Stoughton Printing old-style tip-on jacket.

The jacket reproduces the stereo issue's design, with the Stereo Records imprint "in association with Contemporary Records" across the top. On the back are Nat Hentoff's original liner notes, dated January 1, 1958, alongside the original technical-data panel describing the two-channel Ampex recorder and the Westrex 45-45 StereoDisc cutting system.

Leroy Walks! was Vinnegar's first album as a leader. Koenig produced it over three sessions at Contemporary's Los Angeles studio in July and September 1957, with Roy DuNann and Howard Holzer engineering, and Contemporary released it in 1958. Vinnegar's sextet was Gerald Wilson on trumpet, Teddy Edwards on tenor saxophone, Victor Feldman on vibraharp, Carl Perkins on piano and Tony Bazley on drums. Feldman wrote several of the arrangements, and Hentoff quotes him noting that this was Bazley's first jazz record.

The title is a nod to the walking bass lines that earned Vinnegar the nickname "The Walker," and six of the seven tunes put a walk in their titles, from his own opener "Walk On" to Richard Carpenter's "Walkin'." Hentoff's notes say Vinnegar was born in Indianapolis in 1928 and arrived in Los Angeles in 1954. Perkins was a childhood friend from Indianapolis who later worked with him as a duo. AllMusic's Scott Yanow called the album "a fine, straight-ahead session." Vinnegar later returned to the theme on Leroy Walks Again!!

Tracklist

Side 1

Walk On

Would You Like To Take A Walk

On The Sunny Side Of The Street

Side 2

Walkin'

Walkin' My Baby Back Home

I'll Walk Alone

Walking By The River

UPC: 888072471481
Label: Craft Recordings
Release Date: 6.16.23
Format: Vinyl

https://evergreenvinyl.com/products/leroy-vinnegar-leroy-walks-contemporary-records-acoustic-sounds-series
