The band produced it themselves and recorded it with Joel and Troy Otte at StudiOtte in their hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan. The title and the loose story the songs follow come from a Chinese folk tale in which a prince and princess, newly married, are kept apart by a river they are forbidden to cross. Vocalist Jordan Dreyer has called the tale a \"jumping-off point\" and has described the record as more autobiographical than the story it borrows.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eRock Sound placed the album at No. 53 in its 2012 list of 101 Modern Classics.
