Burrell led a quintet of Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone, Major Holley Jr. on bass, Bill English on drums and Ray Barretto on congas. \"Soul Lament\" is Burrell alone on guitar, and Turrentine also sits out the title track and \"Gee Baby Ain't I Good To You.\" Burrell wrote everything except \"Mule,\" co-written with Holley, and \"Gee Baby Ain't I Good To You,\" by Andy Razaf and Don Redman.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMidnight Blue came out in early May 1963, seven years after Burrell's debut as a leader on Introducing Kenny Burrell; uDiscover Music counts fifteen albums in between, six of them for Blue Note. NPR placed it in its Basic Jazz Library in 2005, and AllMusic's Scott Yanow calls it one of Burrell's best-known Blue Note sessions.
