Its seven tracks run four on side A and three on side B, and side B includes "My Twin," which runs a little over ten minutes.

Domino's notes describe Materia as a companion LP, or sequel, to Something in the Room She Moves, the album Holter released in 2024. Its starting point is that album's song "Materia," which appears here in two new forms. "Materia 2" sets Holter's voice alongside Jessika Kenney's over drum machine, fretless bass and clarinet, with reworked lyrics. "Materia 3" is the original take from Something, slowed down, and is meant to be heard as a bonus track in homage to the CD era Holter grew up in. The video above is "Materia 2."

Two of the other pieces grew out of the project files and the full band Holter assembled for Something. Two are improvisations, one of them "My Twin," from which she took the riff that became "Fantasy."

Holter produced and arranged the record, with Kenny Gilmore co-producing, engineering and mixing. Elizabeth Goodfellow plays drums and percussion, Devra Hoff fretless bass, Chris Speed saxophone and clarinet, and Tashi Wada synthesizer; Maia adds flute on "My Lost One." It was recorded at 64 Sound and in Holter's own studio, Guy Davie cut the lacquers at Electric Mastering, and Chantal Anderson took the cover photograph.

Tracklist

Side A

The Laugh Is in the Eyes

My Lost One

Fantasy

Materia 2

Side B

Clepsydra

My Twin

Materia 3

Complete the Collection

Two Julia Holter titles at Evergreen Vinyl, this one included: Never Rarely Sometimes Always.

UPC: 887828058211
Label: Domino
Release Date: 8.21.26
Format: Vinyl
