It was his third and final album for Impulse!, the label that had paired him with John Coltrane the year before. Bob Hammer arranged two sessions: one with Hank Jones on piano, Richard Davis on bass and Osie Johnson on drums, and one for octet, where English horn, flute, marimba and Latin percussion color the charts.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe program mixes standards with what Verve calls contemporary material. \"Sunrise, Sunset\" came from Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick's Fiddler on the Roof, \"My Ship\" from Kurt Weill and Ira Gershwin's Lady in the Dark, and \"It Never Entered My Mind\" from Rodgers and Hart's Higher and Higher. Bill Evans' \"Waltz for Debby\" and Henry Mancini's \"A Slow Hot Wind,\" which Verve notes as an early vocal reading of the tune, share the record with \"These Foolish Things.\"\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHartman came up through the big bands of Earl Hines and Dizzy Gillespie in the late 1940s.
