After the long and costly sessions for Shadows Collide with People, he set out to record quickly and sparely, allowing no more than two takes per track. He has said the guiding idea this time was to use very little backing vocal. Sessions ran at Mad Dog Studios and Larrabee East between December 2003 and January 2004, with Ryan Hewitt engineering and mixing.

Frequent collaborator Josh Klinghoffer plays drums, bass and keyboards, adds guitar to "Helical" and the title track, and shares the writing credit on "Helical." The album reached No. 36 on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart.
