I : is the vinyl half of a pair John Frusciante released on February 3, 2023, and it exists only on vinyl. Its name is pronounced "one". The companion : I I . ("two") came out on CD and digital and runs longer; Frusciante's notes explain that some of its tracks carry sounds that cannot be pressed on vinyl. This 2LP is the shorter set, and it holds one track the CD does not: OFD, on side C.

The seven pieces were recorded in 2022, after a year and a half of writing and recording rock music with his band, the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Frusciante set up patches on a Monomachine or an Analog Four, let them run and changed them slowly, then recorded each piece live to a CD burner on one or two machines, with no overdubs. By his account the sequences never go beyond a single note, and several pieces rest on one pattern. He has described the work as a way of rebalancing himself before and during the band's mixing process, with sculpture, and the way it can suggest movement and stillness at once, as the guiding idea.

His notes name the artists he was listening to at the time, among them Chris Watson, Bernard Parmegiani, Jana Winderen, Oren Ambarchi and Ryoji Ikeda, alongside Brian Eno's original idea of ambient music. Together the two records are his twelfth and thirteenth studio albums, and they sit in ambient and drone territory.

The jacket credits Frusciante as writer and producer. Mastering is by Lopazz at Mixmastering, publishing is through Songs of Universal, and the artwork is by Lastminutepanic. The four sides follow the back of the sleeve, with Firpln filling side B by itself, and the titles keep the sleeve's own spellings, Unitiled among them. Avenue 66 is the leftfield sub-label of the Berlin label Acid Test, and this was Frusciante's first release there under his own name, after the Trickfinger album She Smiles Because She Presses The Button.

Tracklist

Side A

Clank

Sluice

Side B

Firpln

Side C

Unitiled

OFD

Side D

Pyn

MK 2.1

UPC: 4251804129510
Label: Avenue 66
Release Date: 2.3.23
Format: Vinyl
