john-craigie-no-rain-no-rose-vinyl
John Craigie - No Rain, No Rose (Vinyl)

Vinyl LP

No Rain, No Rose on vinyl: the fifth studio album by Portland folk singer-songwriter John Craigie, pressed as a single LP and issued on Zabriskie Point Records, the same label that released his 2009 album Montana Tale. Its thirteen songs run about 51 minutes, and the album first appeared on January 27, 2017.

Craigie recorded the album in his living room in Portland, Oregon, and produced it himself, drawing the players from around the city. Shook Twins and Gregory Alan Isakov sing on "Highway Blood," and Isakov returns on "I Am California." The core band includes Tyler Thompson on drums and banjo, Jay Cobb Anderson on electric guitar, Brad Parsons on piano, Bevin Foley on fiddle, Niko Daoussis on mandolin, John Nuhn on upright bass and Will Koster on dobro. Bart Budwig engineered and mixed the sessions, and Adam Gonsalves mastered them.

The songs follow Craigie's life as a traveling musician and the sense of home he found in Portland after moving north from Los Angeles. The title adapts the Buddhist saying "No mud, no lotus," the idea that good things grow out of hard ones; in Portland, the City of Roses, the rose takes the lotus's place. The studio banter left in among the tracks nods to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's 1972 album Will the Circle Be Unbroken, and the record includes a folk reading of the Rolling Stones' "Tumbling Dice" with Jay Cobb Anderson and Shook Twins.
