Kevin Gray cut the lacquers at Cohearent Audio in an all-analog chain from the original master tapes, and the record is pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at RTI. The jacket is a Stoughton tip-on reproducing the original Prestige front, Marc Rice's red brush illustration, and the disc label recreates the yellow Prestige design under the catalog number CR00947.

A new Original Jazz Classics obi strip wraps the jacket. It carries the session credits, a short note on Coltrane's Prestige years, and a four-star DownBeat notice from Dom Cerulli. The back of the jacket reproduces Ira Gitler's original liner notes along with the "recording by Van Gelder" and "supervision by Bob Weinstock" credits.

This was Coltrane's third studio album, cut at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, on August 23, 1957, and released by Prestige in 1958 as PRLP 7123. Red Garland plays piano, Paul Chambers bass and Art Taylor drums. Gitler's notes point out that Garland and Chambers had been original members of the Miles Davis quintet alongside Coltrane, and that the Garland, Chambers and Taylor rhythm section had already recorded several albums of its own for Prestige as the Red Garland Trio.

The program pairs two Coltrane blues with three outside tunes. The opener, "Traneing In," later gave the album a second name: Prestige reissued the session in 1961 as Traneing In, with a new catalog number and a different cover, and this edition returns to the 1958 artwork. Gitler explains that "Bass Blues" was named for its theme, played in unison by Coltrane and Chambers on pizzicato bass. Alonzo Levister wrote "Slow Dance," and the record closes on Irving Berlin's "Soft Lights and Sweet Music."

Tracklist

Side A

Traneing In

Slow Dance

Side B

Bass Blues

You Leave Me Breathless

Soft Lights And Sweet Music

UPC: 888072738652
Label: Craft Recordings
Release Date: 10.9.26
Format: Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0718/8801/1422/files/John_Coltrane_Red_Garland_Trio_Pack_Shot_w_obi_LP.png?v=1791182141
https://evergreenvinyl.com/products/john-coltrane-john-coltrane-with-the-red-garland-trio-original-jazz-classics-vinyl
