Kevin Gray cut the lacquers from the original master tapes at Cohearent Audio in an all-analog chain, and RTI pressed the record on 180-gram black vinyl.

The packaging follows the series format. A high-gloss Stoughton tip-on jacket reproduces the Prestige 7105 front cover, with design and photography by Esmond Edwards, and an obi strip folds around the left edge carrying the session credits and a DownBeat review by Don Gold. The back cover reprints Ira Gitler's original liner notes and the per-track personnel listing under the new catalog number CR00945, and the disc ships in a Craft-branded rice-paper-style poly inner sleeve.

Original Jazz Classics began under Fantasy Records in 1982 and was relaunched by Craft in 2023; the series has reissued more than 850 jazz albums drawn from Prestige, Riverside, Contemporary, Pablo and other catalogs.

Coltrane was recorded on May 31, 1957, at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, New Jersey, and Prestige released it that October as PRLP 7105. It documents his first session as sole leader, after Bob Weinstock signed him to a contract dated April 9, 1957. Paul Chambers on bass and Red Garland on piano came from the Miles Davis band; Philadelphia colleagues Johnnie Splawn on trumpet and Albert "Tootie" Heath on drums joined them, along with Sahib Shihab on baritone saxophone. Garland plays piano on side A and Mal Waldron on side B. The program pairs Calvin Massey's "Bakai" and two Coltrane originals, "Straight Street" and "Chronic Blues", with three standards including the seldom-recorded "Time Was". By the summer Coltrane was playing in Thelonious Monk's quartet, and the album has since circulated under the alternate title The First Trane!.

Tracklist

Side A

Bakai

Violets For Your Furs

Time Was

Side B

Straight Street

While My Lady Sleeps

Chronic Blues

UPC: 888072738348
Label: Craft Recordings
Release Date: 8.14.26
Format: Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0718/8801/1422/files/CR00945JohnColtrane-ColtranePackShotobi.png?v=1791181973
