Gray's KPG@CA mark sits in the runout on both sides, next to the matrix numbers RM1-1354-A and RM1-1354-B. Rhino issued it on January 9, 2026 as part of its Start Your Ear Off Right 2026 slate, and the same LP, catalog number RM1 1354, is one of the six records in Rhino's 1960-1964 mono box of Coltrane's Atlantic albums.

The heavyweight glossy gatefold jacket wears the alternate cover from the original French pressing, Atlantic 332.032, with the original US artwork inside the gatefold. The back reproduces that French jacket: Face A and Face B track credits, a personnel box in French and liner notes credited after Zita Carno. An obi strip lists the pressing details, and an insert carries new notes by Syd Schwartz. It is a limited edition.

Atlantic first released Coltrane Jazz in early 1961 as SD 1354, the album that followed Giant Steps, with Nesuhi Ertegun supervising and Tom Dowd and Phil Iehle engineering. Dental bridge problems had kept Coltrane out of the studio for six months after the Giant Steps sessions; when he returned in November and December 1959 he brought in the Miles Davis Quintet's rhythm section of Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb, and those two dates supplied all but one track here. Coltrane wrote five of the eight pieces, alongside Hoagy Carmichael and Stanley Adams' "Little Old Lady," Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen's "My Shining Hour" and Valentine and Treadwell's "I'll Wait and Pray."

The exception is "Village Blues," recorded October 21, 1960 with McCoy Tyner, Steve Davis and Elvin Jones at the start of the week that produced My Favorite Things. It was the first session to feature Coltrane with Tyner and Jones, who went on to tour and record with him in the classic quartet from 1960 to 1965.

Tracklist

Side A

Little Old Lady (4:25)

Village Blues (5:21)

My Shining Hour (4:50)

Fifth House (4:38)

Side B

Harmonique (4:10)

Like Sonny (5:51)

I'll Wait and Pray (3:32)

Some Other Blues (5:38)

UPC: 081227807856
Label: Atlantic
Release Date: 1.9.26
Format: Vinyl

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0718/8801/1422/files/JohnColtrane_ColtraneJazz_HiFiExploded.png?v=1791733540
