Warner Records and Rhino issued it in 2020 under catalog number RR1 1749, from a remaster dated 2018. The album itself first appeared on Warner Bros.-Seven Arts in July 1968.

Phil Lesh supervised the remix. Introducing the 2018 anniversary edition, Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux said it was made to bring the album closer to the newer fans who had arrived with Workingman's Dead and American Beauty, and that it had become the most commonly heard version of the record. Elusive Disc's notes list where it departs from the 1968 mix: the vocals and organ that open side one sit in the center rather than panned wide, Bob Weir's studio vocal on the first track runs alone instead of doubled with a live take, and "Born Cross-Eyed" ends on a power chord in E where the original fades out early.

Both mixes share the same collage underneath. Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh, working with soundman Dan Healy, cut concert tapes from late 1967 and early 1968 into the studio recordings, letting one performance dissolve into another inside a single song. The live sources include two Pacific Northwest stops: Seattle's Eagles Auditorium in January 1968 and Portland's Crystal Ballroom that February. It was the first Dead album with second drummer Mickey Hart, Tom Constanten added prepared piano and electronic tape, and Robert Hunter supplied the words for "Alligator." Rolling Stone placed the album at number 288 on its list of the 500 greatest albums in both 2003 and 2012.

The record label credits a fourth movement of "That's It for the Other One," titled "We Leave the Castle," which the back cover leaves out.

Tracklist

Side One

That's It for the Other One: I.
