The series launched in 2019, the label's 80th anniversary year.

Hubbard cut the album with his new quintet shortly after leaving Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, with Alfred Lion producing and Van Gelder engineering, and Blue Note issued it as BST 84172 in August 1964. It was Joe Chambers' first recording; he wrote "Mirrors," and the other four pieces are Hubbard's. Blue Note's notes describe the title track moving from free-form playing into a calypso and back. In Hubbard's Blue Note chronology it falls between Doin' the Thang! and Blue Spirits.

In 2022, the year this edition was issued, Breaking Point! reached No. 4 on Billboard's Top Jazz Albums chart and No. 1 on the UK Jazz & Blues Albums chart.
