The band made it with producer Ross Robinson at Blackie Lawless's Fort Apache studio in Los Angeles, in a week, on a budget of about $5,000. When the band turned down the deal Robinson offered them, the album was shelved: Robinson kept the master tapes and the band kept the songs. A tape of the sessions helped Fear Factory sign to Roadrunner Records, and Robinson went on to produce Korn.

Eight of the songs were re-recorded for the 1992 debut, Soul of a New Machine, among them "Big God/Raped Souls," "Crisis" and "Self Immolation." "Concrete" came back as "Concreto," a B-side from the Demanufacture period, and "Soulwomb" became "Soulwound." Five, including "Echoes of Innocence" and "Ulceration," were never recorded again; "Ulceration" takes its name from the band's original name.
