Thirteen songs run across four sides of two records, unevenly divided: four on A, two on B, five on C, two on D.

Josh Tillman recorded Pure Comedy in 2016 at United Studios in Hollywood, producing it with Jonathan Wilson. Trevor Spencer engineered, and Gavin Bryars wrote the orchestral arrangements. Tillman describes the album as the story of a species born with a half-formed brain, whose reliance on other half-formed brains takes on names like love, culture and family over time.

Sub Pop's own notes place the record in a line of American songwriting that runs through Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman and Leonard Cohen.
