Five performances run across two sides: Cole Porter's "What Is This Thing Called Love" and Dolphy's own blues "245" on side A, then Milt Jackson's "Bag's Groove," David Raksin's "Laura" and Thelonious Monk's "52nd St. Theme" on side B. The back cover prints the composer credits, the full personnel and the place and date of the recording.

The vinyl sequence is not the one these recordings first appeared in. On the French Serene CD that introduced the music, "Bag's Groove" closed the program after "Laura" and "52nd St. Theme"; on this LP it opens the second side.

The concert was taped on September 4, 1961, at Västmanlands-Dala Nation in Uppsala, Sweden, during Dolphy's second visit to Europe. He plays alto saxophone, bass clarinet and flute in front of a local rhythm section: Rony Johansson on piano, Kurt Lindgren on bass and Rune Carlsson on drums.

Reviewing the full concert for AllMusic, Scott Yanow pointed to the 20-and-a-half-minute "245," to "Laura" with Dolphy unaccompanied on alto, and to "Bag's Groove" as his only recording of that piece. All nine performances from the evening were released together as The Complete Uppsala Concert, a double CD on Gambit Records, in 2005.

Tracklist

Side A

What Is This Thing Called Love

245

Side B

Bag's Groove

Laura

52nd St. Theme

UPC: 7427244912969
Label: Honeypie
Release Date: 6.28.24
Format: Vinyl
