The duo recorded it in early 1987, moving between Marley Marl's home studio and Power Play Studios in Manhattan, with Patrick Adams engineering most of the tracks. The title song was one of three cut at Power Play the night before a label deadline, and Rakim wrote its lyrics in about five minutes.

The running order holds ten tracks, three of them instrumentals, and carries Marley Marl's remixes of "Eric B. Is President" and "My Melody," the two sides of the duo's first single, rather than the original versions. Five singles came from the album. It reached No. 58 on the Billboard 200 and No. 8 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, and the RIAA certified it platinum in 1995.
