It was one of three heavyweight vinyl reissues of the band's first albums, and it reached UK shops on December 11, 2020. The runout etchings credit the lacquer cut to Abbey Road. This is the European pressing, distributed in the US as an import.

The running order is the original UK one. The two bonus tracks from the American CD, "Whisper Grass" and "Lay Down Your Cross," are not included, so side two closes on the short "Flying Dream 143."

V2 Records first issued Cast of Thousands in the UK on August 18, 2003. Elbow made it at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool and co-produced it with Ben Hillier. The title comes from "Grace Under Pressure": the crowd at the band's 2002 Glastonbury set sang its refrain, and everyone who then registered on the band's website got a credit on the sleeve. The London Community Gospel Choir sings on that track and on "Ribcage." Ian Burdge arranged the strings on "Fugitive Motel" and "Crawling with Idiot."

Art director Rob Crane designed the cover. Its two figures, Elle and Bo, were ten-foot polystyrene models first placed beside the M1 near Mansfield. Police removed them after passing drivers reported alien sightings. Four UK singles came from the record: "Fallen Angel," "Fugitive Motel," "Not a Job," and a "Grace Under Pressure"/"Switching Off" EP. It holds a Metacritic score of 84, from 23 reviews.

Tracklist

Side A

Ribcage

Fallen Angel

Fugitive Motel

Snooks (Progress Report)

Switching Off

Side B

Not A Job

I've Got Your Number

Buttons And Zips

Crawling With Idiot

Grace Under Pressure

Flying Dream 143

UPC: 602508940354
Label: Polydor / Umgd
Release Date: 1.8.21
Format: Vinyl
