The first pressing was on butter yellow vinyl and came with a sticker pack and a digital download. Later pressings on black vinyl carry the same barcode, so the color of a copy depends on which pressing is in stock.

May had moved from Mississippi to Los Angeles, and he wrote and recorded the album in a bedroom in the city's Highland Park neighborhood, producing it himself and playing nearly every instrument. According to the label, the eleven songs were picked from dozens he wrote after the move.

The title track is a duet with Frankie Cosmos; that is its official video above. Carpark's notes place the record alongside Los Angeles songwriters Brian Wilson, Van Dyke Parks and Harry Nilsson, with strings, boogie piano and synthesizers around the songs.

May was born in Jackson, Mississippi, and made three albums for Paw Tracks before this one, beginning with The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele in 2009. "Face Down in the Gutter of Your Love," "Picture on a Screen" and "90210" came out as singles ahead of the album.

Tracklist

Side A

Hello Cruel World

Picture on a Screen

Across the Multiverse (feat.
