The label's notes place it in a limited purple vinyl series. Two discs carry the seven performances of the original 1972 double album across four sides, with "Space Truckin'" filling side D on its own.

The recordings come from Deep Purple's first tour of Japan: three shows on August 15, 16 and 17, 1972, at Festival Hall in Osaka and the Budokan in Tokyo. Martin Birch, who had engineered the band's studio albums, taped them on an 8-track machine, and the album carries no overdubs. Four of the seven tracks come from the second Osaka night; "Smoke On The Water" is from the first, while "The Mule" and "Lazy" were taken from Tokyo.

This is the Mk II lineup: Ian Gillan on vocals, Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Jon Lord on organ, Roger Glover on bass and Ian Paice on drums, with photography credited to Fin Costello. On release the album reached No. 16 in the UK and No. 6 in the US, where the live "Smoke On The Water" was paired with its studio version on a single that climbed to No. 4 on the Billboard chart. A 2012 Rolling Stone readers' poll ranked Made in Japan the sixth best live album of all time.

Tracklist

LP 1, Side A

Highway Star

Child In Time

LP 1, Side B

Smoke On The Water

The Mule

LP 2, Side C

Strange Kind Of Woman

Lazy

LP 2, Side D

Space Truckin'

UPC: 603497850419
Label: Rhino Warner Classic
Release Date: 10.18.19
Format: Vinyl
