It reached No. 1 on the Billboard album chart and earned a Grammy nomination for its score. \"Freddie's Dead,\" the first single, was released ahead of the album and peaked at No. 4 on the Hot 100 and No. 2 on the R\u0026amp;B chart; it and the title song each sold a million copies and were certified gold.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMayfield's lyrics comment on the drug trade the film portrays and criticize several of its characters directly. Writing in Rolling Stone in 1972, Bob Donat judged the soundtrack's anti-drug message far stronger and more definite than the movie's. On screen most of the songs, \"Freddie's Dead\" among them, are heard only as instrumentals; on the record, \"Junkie Chase\" and \"Think\" are the two pieces without vocals.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLater recognition followed.
